Within the early weeks of the GCT increase the daily newspapers devoted some space to suggestions on how to manage financially when spending more and getting less in return. Currency and relevance to readers were essential reasons for providing those tips. And though much has not been done since, the necessity is still there. How to survive on less is an everyday feature of life, one that conscientious business people can facilitate. No one is in business to incur a loss, but in these tougher times where every individual has less to magically go further on, there is an opportunity to extend much needed kindness to fellow citizens and at the same time, nurture relationships of loyalty with consumers, old and new.

Collectively redirecting the interest of consumers to not only items they can realistically afford but to locally made ones is the key to this concept working. Tell people about the wider existing variety, point out the value and maybe hidden benefits of alternate choices and wait for consumer sense to prevail - which it will if the initial offer was genuinely good. Maybe accidentally or purposefully, some businesses do adopt this approach to keeping and increasing customers, but it extends and permeates many other aspects of life.

In a business sense, tough times can be managed with strategies that make conditions into opportunities. There is nothing that can halt or reverse the foreign influences; it is then a matter of how to fashion those influences on consumers to help them, and therefore the overall economy - for a legal and personal profit. The next level of the principle can be seen in the millions worldwide who cannot recall the days of ever functioning without a cell phone, television and VCR, now DVD player; they can't remember that there is other home entertainment besides cable and surfing the web. Some can't recall the good "ole" reliable land-line phone.

While questionable at best, the interpretation of these things being progressive is not an issue. It is how we in the Caribbean have used or not used this marketing and public relations principle to the advantage of our economic growth. With foreign clothes, cars, books, food, etc, the story is just a repeat with different fine print (though for lots of things there is little choice as they are not manufactured here). But the appetite is undeniable - in spite of more GCT and disproportional incomes.

Right now it is about the idea of offering something different, say, more indigenous, and bearing out the teething stages of gaining acceptance, fine-tuning based on feedback and literally fighting the current of what may not be the most prudent choices.

Laziness seems to prevail in the choice for reruns or knock-off shows with little originality. The latter reflects low national self-confidence and it is prevalent in everything. We cut ourselves out of the picture before even trying to fit in and then work at an excuse - it is not good enough in quality, we cannot produce enough, we cannot sell enough - and in come all things foreign. The process of growth in this area has to be supported by government policy in this developing nation. More people willing to conduct their businesses with these principles, who are willing to do so along the lines of a live-and-let-live principle is one of the immediate core needs of this nation.
